Transitional Décor: Autumn to Winter
I love multi-purpose pieces. From furniture, to kitchen gadgets, to clothing and home decor, I always favor items that double-dip in the useful department. When it comes to seasonal decor, investing in the right pieces provide the perfect base to easily transition from autumn to winter.
When accessorizing your space, I find that it helps to start with a vision. This could look like a description of how you want to use your space, the impression you're looking for, or even just a Pinterest board! To determine what decor will transition well in your home from season to season, I recommend writing a list of ideas that describe each time of year, and seeing what is in common between them.
My list looks something like this…
Some decor pieces that will fit the vision for both seasons are candles, chunky blankets, signs with phrases like "gather" or "sweater weather," images of red pick up trucks, flannels or other cozy fabrics, and soft lights hung up around the house. You can purchase "neutral" items in this vein, which could look like black and white buffalo check, muted or earthy color tones, or true neutrals like cream, faux fur, and rustic wood tones.
For a visual example, check out this mood board of transitional pieces…
When incorporating these items into your autumn home decor, add season-specific elements like pumpkins, acorns, leaves, apples, and basically the color orange. Think of adding phrases like "fall in love", "harvest", "hello fall", or "thankful."
See how the transitional items can be used with seasonal touches to celebrate the season of autumn?
To adapt your pieces to the winter season, incorporate evergreen branches, more splashes of red, and snowflakes. Messages for this season include "deck the halls", "let it snow", "merry and bright", and (of course) "happy holidays".
The same transitional pieces work for winter when they are paired with the elements of the season.
What I notice is that the seasonal elements can be grown in your yard or baked in your kitchen! Remember, you can often find or make the perfect decor items right in your home, and don't need to break the budget to have a beautiful space in any season.
Happy decorating!
