Although Valentines’ day doesn’t come around until mid-February, the season of love starts early in our household! Since our wedding anniversary is in January, we put up our few Valentine’s day decor pieces soon after New Year’s. Wandering our local craft store, this heart-shaped door hanger caught my eye. I was inspired to spruce it up in a little DIY project.

I was happy to find a use for some ribbon left over from decorating the flower girl basket at our wedding, and the rest of the supplies was on sale. All in all, this project was under $10 to complete.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step #1

Gather your supplies. For this DIY project, you’ll need...

  • Silk or fabric flowers

  • Ribbon or lace

  • Wire cutters

  • Scissors

  • Glue gun

  • Wire heart or wreath

Step #2

Using the wire cutters, separate the buds of the fake flowers from the long plastic stem. Be sure to leave enough of the stem (about 3”) to secure the flowers to the chicken wire. Remember, you can always trim them down later! I pushed the leaves up towards the buds to add a little greenery to the finished hanger.

STEP #3

Arrange the flower buds on the heart or wreath, and wrap the stems through the chicken wire to secure them in place. Tuck the ends of the stems behind the flowers as much as possible and trim any extra length.

STEP #4

Tie a bow in the ribbon or lace. Clip the ends at a 45-degree angle or in an inverted “V” shape to prevent ravelling. I added a knotted accent to tie around the center of my bow.

Step #5

Secure the bow and any loose flowers using the glue gun. I wrapped my knotted accent through the chicken wire and glued the ends together on the back side.

Now hang your creation on your door and enjoy!

A FEW TIPS

  • Poke around your craft supplies before shopping for wreath materials. You may find yourself inspired by the bits and pieces left over from past projects!

  • Buy seasonal decor items while they’re on sale - or shop generic items in the off season and get creative. If you plan ahead, you can create your own Valentine’s decorations from heart-themed decor that’s available year-round.

  • While in line at the craft store, search for coupons on your smartphone. I’ll often find a last minute coupon that earns me 10-25% on my supplies.
