No-Buy Valentine’s Décor
I’ve always loved to celebrate - spirit days, holidays, themed parties, and costumes, I’m here for it all! One of my favorite parts of the Christmas season is the decorations, which are an important tradition to many families in the US. During other times in the year, my eager heart wants festive decorations but my minimalist mind doesn’t want the clutter. When it comes to smaller holidays, like Valentine’s day, I use household items to acknowledge the season. This saves money, reduces visual noise, and still allows me to celebrate!
Similar to using transitional décor, the first step to no-buy decorating is to decide what will remind you of Valentine’s day.
Some features that remind me of Valentine’s Day are…
hearts
reds, pinks, purples, and whites
roses
chocolate
loving phrases
elegant scripts
lace
lipstick
candles
Most likely, you already own something in my list! Collect those items and use them as décor. Here’s your chance to get creative, so look for opportunity in common things.
Here are some household Items I’m decorating with…
I collected our red books and grouped them together on our built-in shelf. This adds a pop of color that I really enjoy!
Years ago, a friend of mine made me a hand-sewn heart filled with lavender. It used to hang on a doorknob, but since the ribbon broke I placed it on a shelf next to our wedding photo.
I was given a wooden sign that reads “love” in a pretty script. I used to have it out somewhere year-round, but I display it prominently for Valentine’s day.
I dried petals from flowers my husband gave me and my wedding bouquet. They usually live on my dresser, but this time of year they are potpourri!
You can also use ribbon to spruce up an everyday item. I tied a pink bow around our small green summer wreath and now it’s cheery and lovely.
Our red table cloth and hand towels are out as well - low-hanging fruit!
Fresh roses are another great way to add a Valentine’s vibe to home. Flowers are one of my favorite ways to recognize an season.
I also made this DIY door hanger last year, which now hangs by our kitchen sink. Learn how to make your own here!
Finally, if you have a letterboard, put it to good use! Add a quote about love or a Valentine’s pun.
Using things you already own in unexpected ways is one of my favorite ways to “do more by doing less”. I hope you give it a try!
